List of All Shanghai Hotels
The most dynamic city in the world’s fastest changing nation, Shanghai is an exhilarating metropolis. Shanghai has grown from a provincial city into an international metropolis on par with New York and Paris in just ten years. In China, there is a saying that 'Xian has witnessed 2,000 years of history; Beijing has witnessed 1,000 years of history while Shanghai bears witness to the last 100 years'. Regarded as the 'Oriental Pearl', the city has a unique and important place in modern China and its rich heritage is worthy of exploration.
Today, Shanghai is the commercial centre of China and has one of the most dynamic skylines in the world. It occupies a central location along China's coastline. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai is an excellent sea and river port, boasting easy access to the vast hinterland. Except for a few hills lying in the southwest corner, most parts of the Shanghai area are flat and belong to the alluvial plain of the Yangtze River Delta.
Shanghai is split in two by the Huangpu River with the older town on the west bank known as Pu Xi and the brash new development on the east side being Pudong. As a general rule, Pu Xi embodies "Old Shanghai" and Pu Dong represents "New Shanghai." Excellent examples of this dichotomy are characterized within the architecture, with the early 20th century buildings of the Bund on the Pu Xi side and the conspicuously modern architecture of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Grand Hyatt Shanghai on the Pu Dong side.
Shanghai's relatively small city centre makes it easy to navigate. The city's different neighbourhoods are best explored as a pedestrian, so those prepared to do a lot of walking will get the most from a holiday in Shanghai. Chiefly a financial district but also a growing community, Pu Dong offers increasingly more to do and see. The shops and eateries along Century Boulevard, designed to be a 21st Century main street to match the ultra-modern sky scrapers and business culture, will be a world class walking district by the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, supposedly the largest structure of its kind in Asia, and a symbol of Shanghai's prosperity, looms high over the city. The tower welcomes visitors and houses the Shanghai History Museum. Nearby Jin Mao Tower caps the Pearl's view. Tucked between the shopping malls and the eye-popping modern architecture is the old Shanghai, where temples nestle down alleys along with street markets and classical Chinese gardens. The Old Centre in the Yu Yuan area, where you can find one of the oldest streets of China, is a good starting point for a boat trip on the Huangpu river or a visit to the Yu Yuan Market. Although the city is fairly commercial these days, Shanghai's residents have made an major effort in creating 'green zones' in the city. There are parks and traditional gardens in the area. The Bund is definitely one of Shanghai's major highlights and offers an impressive showcase of Shanghai's colonial past. Beautifully preserved art deco and neoclassical buildings face the waterfront and the developing Pu Dong skyline.
Dining is one of the most enjoyable aspects of a Shanghai trip. In addition to Shanghai dishes, restaurants in the city offer a wide variety of foods from other parts of China as well as a number of foreign dishes. Shanghai is also a shopper's paradise. There are various bustling commercial streets and shopping centres. Shanghai's gorgeous night scene is one of the main highlights that will linger in visitors' minds owing to its ornate feature. As night descends the entire city is lit up by dizzily colourful lights joined occasionally by the bright moon hanging in the sky.
Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, modern department stores stock all the stylish trappings, and the restaurant and clubbing scene pulsate with an energy all their own. China's biggest and most prosperous city oozes an atmosphere of vitality and modernity.
