TRAVEL GUIDE
Nha Trang, the capital of Khanh Hoa province, sits on the south coast of Vietnam around 450km north of Ho Chi Minh City. Nha Trang Bay has been acknowledged as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Surrounded by islands, mountains and white sand beaches, the city is Vietnam's number one beach resort town with a relaxed atmosphere and well-developed tourist services. While Nha Trang is increasingly becoming known as the place to come and party for the younger “backpacker” crowd, it also offers a range of higher-end beach resorts for families or those who just want to get away.
Nha Trang is a fantastic seaside resort with 6 major beaches. A major face-lift and the opening of two upscale hotels in 1996 vaulted Nha Trang onto the beach playing field with places like Phuket in Thailand. Perhaps more than any other city in Vietnam, Nha Trang has done a great job of reinvesting tourism dollars into infrastructure. The results are evident not only along the waterfront pedestrian path, but also in parks, bridges and streets throughout the city. The main strip is Tran Phu Street, which runs north-south along the sea. A wide palm-lined boulevard separates elegant Mediterranean villas and modern hotels from one of Vietnam's loveliest beaches. It is a wide boulevard, bisected by a grassy median with street lamps. Numerous restaurants and bars line the beach side while hotels and more restaurants line the other.
Miles and miles of empty beaches, deserted bays, numerous islands and coral reefs provide opportunity to swim, snorkel and scuba dive. Nha Trang is also the scuba diving centre of Vietnam, where visibility can hit 30m and the marine life includes reef sharks and stingrays. The coral is in good condition and inhabited by several species of tropical fish, including those masters of camouflage, the cuttlefish, as well as smaller residents such as Moorish Idols and French angelfish. Island hopping off its coast offers diverse entertainment that is offered by no other city. Bamboo island has many beautiful white sand beaches - Tru, Me, Vung Ngan and Bich Dam beaches. Ebony island is famous fcr its black cliffs, colourful coral reefs and the still ocean. Monkey island is home to five species of monkey. A little beyond Po Nagar lies Hon Chong, a scenic beach that is reputed to have the best seafood in the area and the best view of the area's mountainous coastline. South of town, there is Emperor Bao Dai's former holiday retreat, now a hotel. From Hon Chong, travel north to Hon Chong Beach or south to the larger Nha Trang Beach. Further afield, Nha Trang is a perfect base to explore outlying places such as Whale Island, Jungle Beach and even the central highlands.
For the culture tourist, the huge White Buddha seated on a hillside above Long Son Pagoda in the northwest of town is Nha Trang's major landmark. It was crafted in 1963 to symbolize the Buddhist struggle against the repressive Diem regime, and around its lotus-shaped pedestal are carved images of the monks and nuns that set fire to themselves in protest. Chanh Toa cathedral built in Gothic style, stands atop a small hill overlooking the train station. Long Son pagoda is the most prominent pagoda in Nha Trang and is surrounded by beautiful shrines and gardens. The National Oceanographic Institute built in 1923, displays a number of extinct specimens of local marine creatures. Nha Trang also has an excellent small museum devoted to the life and work of Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943), a pioneering French medical researcher who established a laboratory in the town. Ponagar towers close to Long Son pagoda, were built between the 7th and 12th centuries. North of town, across the Nha Trang River, lies the Po Nagar Cham site. The ancient Cham towers sit high atop a hill; the views overlooking the river and town are breathtaking.
