List of All Koh Phi Phi Hotels
Koh Phi Phi Overview
Koh Phi Phi is a small archipelago in Krabi Province, located at an equal distance from both Krabi and Phuket of about 40 kilometres. Made up of six small and large isles, the fine, white sandy beaches and breathtaking rock formations rising from the vivid turquoise waters that surround the islands will instantly confirm you have arrived in paradise.
Ko Phi Phi Don is the largest island of the group and the only island with permanent inhabitants. It covers an area of 28 square kilometres. The dump bell-shaped island is endowed with green rolling hills, spectacular cliffs, long powdery white beaches and emerald water.
An attractive beach on the southern side curves around Ton Sai Bay providing the dock for boats from Phuket and Krabi. On the northern side of the ‘handle’ just a few hundred metres away is the fine beach of Loh Dalum Bay. About 2 kilometres southeast from Ton Sai Bay, you will find Hat Yao (long beach), home to Phi Phi Don’s finest coral reefs. Further north, passing the beautiful Hat Lanti, which is famous for surfing, Hat Laem Thong stands against an impressive range of stone cliffs and breathtaking scenery. At the north end is Cape Laem Thong, where there is a Chao Ley, or sea gipsy village. Laem Tong offers beautiful marine nature and diving here is excellent. Diving can also be done as well at Laem Hua Raket, Hat Yao, Hin Phae and Hua Rah Ket to the extreme south. Two curving bays are especially beautiful: Ton Sai and Loh Dalam. This is also where most accommodation and tourist services are found. A number of other options are available at Ao Ton Sai and Ao Lo Da Lam. By virtue of its remote location, Lam tong is the quiet end to stay on Phi Phi Island.
About 2 kilometers to the south is Phi Phi Le. This islet is uninhabited as there is no beach area as the island descends abruptly into the sea on all sides. It is surrounded by limestone mountains and high hills with jutting cliffs. Phi Phi Le, with its cliffs, natural caves and water-filled canyon offers the tourists exciting and outdoor pursuits. The sea is 20 metres deep and the deepest point in the south of the island is around 34 metres. Ko Phi Phi Le offers superb scenic bays such as Ao Pi Le, Ao Maya, and Ao Lo Sa Ma. Ao Maya and Ao Lo Sama - Phi Phi Islands scenic coves are favourite snorkeling places while the sea around the islands, especially the southern part, which is deep and full of coral formations are popular diving spots. Ao Pileh is very nearly enclosed by the limestone walls of the island's cliffs, so that the water appears almost to be an island sea. On Phi Phi Le's northeast is the famous Viking Cave; it is a place much revered by the local people who come there to collect the swift's nests used to make Bird's Nest Soup, a Chinese delicacy. On the eastern and southern walls of the cave are colored drawings dating from historic times. There are pictures of elephants and also of various boats: European, Arab and Chinese sailing ships; baroques, motorboats and steamships.
Ko Phai ('Bamboo Island') and Yung Islands also boast some fantastic beaches; while Bida Nok and Nai islands are little more than large rocks, used mainly by divers, who say the underwater scenery here is among the most beautiful in Krabi. All around the Phi Phi Islands, marine life is abundant and snorkelling stops will be a feature of any tour. Visibility here is excellent - up to 20 metres - and the variety of coral and fish you will see is amazing.
Exploring Phi Phi is an adventure with scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking and climbing being the most popular when taking a break from the silky soft sands. The surrounding waters are Thailand's only true deep dive sites. Just sitting on a beach is another option if all this activity is too much to bear. One of the most rewarding days out can be a boat tour around the various limestone outcrops. Another very good half day out is to walk up to the viewpoint in Phi Phi Don to see just how unique Phi Phi is with the two beaches curving away from each other.
Nightime on Phi-Phi is a fairly relaxed time for most, with people milling around taking in the unique atmosphere. There are a few places to really go wild and let your hair down and also some excellent restaurants to sample the local delights. There are more bars in Tonsai Village than ever, offering living music; restaurants specialising in popular European cusines and Thai food; cabarets; souvenir shops; dive shops and charter boat operations offering game fishing excursions and day trips, including several opportunities for snorkelling, around the major islands have all made it a busy trading place, especially in the evening. Naturally much of the items on sale are aimed at the tourist market, but with no traffic other than the odd bike, shopping here is a fine experience. For such a small place Phi Phi has an amazing number of restaurants and places ranging from quality French cooking to simple quick burger joints.
