Khao Lak, located just north of Phuket Island on the gorgeous Andaman seaboard, is one of Thailand's most peaceful destinations. The beach at Khao Lak has been developed into a refuge for nature lovers and tourists seeking a peaceful, quiet holiday area.
Khao Lak beach is an exceptionally long stretch of pristine golden sand picturesquely studded with granite boulders. It actually comprises of three individual beaches and, at the far northern end, there is a network of sandy beach trails, some of which lead to completely deserted stretches. Khao Lak is surrounded by rice fields and rubber, palm and coconut plantations. The interior is covered in magnificent natural jungle and rises to meet high hills, cut by streams and cascading waterfalls. No less than three national parks are embraced by the surrounding hills that sweep down to this lovely stretch of coastline. Khao Lak has now made an amazing recovery from the Tsunami damage and the endless beaches are as lovely and beautiful as ever. The jungle has reclaimed the coastline and there are no high-rise buildings to spoil the view. Khao Lak's greatest asset is its pristine beach, clear waters and raw jungle.
It is one of Thailand's last unspoilt and protected resources of nature and includes several Marine and land based National Parks. Partly encompassing Hat Khao Lak, the forested hills of Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park tower over the natural coastal beauty. This 125 sq km National Park is a lovely collection of sea cliffs, hills, beaches and evergreen forest with lots of exotic plants and wildlife. Sri Phang Nga National Park, located in the Kuraburi and Takua Pa districts, is about 60 kms from Khao Lak. Visitors can see tropical forest, spend a day hiking or even stay overnight in the park camping grounds.
The Similian Islands National Marine Park can be easily reached and lies 55 km due west of Khao Lak. These islands are world renowned among diving enthusiasts for amazing underwater siteseeing. To the north west is the Surin Islands National Marine Park; these islands are also suited to exploring, hiking, snorkeling and diving; Apart from swimming in the clear sea water, travelers can enjoy live-aboard scuba diving to the newly evolved underworld sea. In contrast, ones can experience nature tours such as elephant trekking, rafting and hiking to the temple caves in the unspoilt National Parks. As an alternative, take a boat cruise or sea kayak through Phang Nga Bay with its unique limestone rock formations and sea gypsy village. Or venture further north to Khao Sok in neighbouring Surat Thani, southern Thailand's oldest and largest national park and canoe through the awesome scenery with lakeside wildlife viewing, trekking and camping. The Khao Lak environs also offers some splendid offshore diving and snorkeling experiences. Live coral formations can be found just off the coast. There is also a nearby wreck dive.
In essence, Khao Lak offers relaxation, tranquility and charm in a splendid unspoilt environment on the beautiful Andaman coastline surrounded by National Park forest. It might not be an island, but with miles of unspoiled beaches unfurling in front you, Khao Lak has all the best parts of a deserted island escape. Khao Lak is the ideal Thailand tourist destination for couples, nature lovers, divers and families alike.

"One major problem is the language barrier in as much that the front desk staff have very little knowledge of english. Despite this, over-all we find the hotel room and the facilities to be acceptable for me and my husband. The hotel is close to the MTR station and is within a major commercial shopping district. Its higly recommendable if not for the hotel personnel.The room is clean and the basic amnenities are made available for the guests. We had a very good view of the Pudong business district. The lobby looks a bit shabby. They could have made it more inviting."
