List of All Mae Hong Son Hotels
Mae Hong Son is a provincial capital in Northern Thailand nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges near the border with Myanmar. Virtually covered with mist throughout the year, the city has gained its nickname "the City of Three Mists" from the fact that it has dewy mist in the winter, forest fire mist in the summer and rainy mist in the rainy season. Also known as Thailand's Siberia because of its isolation, Mae Hong Son is an enchanting, tranquil retreat now conveniently reached by daily flights from Chiang Mai, bringing growing numbers of tourists, attracted by the spectacular scenery, numerous hilltribe communities and soft adventure opportunities.
Most of the areas of Mae Hong Son Province are complex mountain ranges and likely still pristine virgin forest. Of the approximately 6,976,650 rai of national forest reserves, 88.02% is thought to be pristine virgin forest. Although once hardly accessible, the transportation system has been expanded to offer visitors easier access to most of the natural attractions in Mae Hong Son, making it possible for more people to catch a glimpse of this breathtaking area. One of the most charming aspects of the area is the pristine perfection of its natural environment. Mae Hong Son's famous Buathong fields, waterfalls, caves, hot springs and forest areas are all cautiously preserved and preciously treasured by the people of the province.
The city itself is situated in a peaceful spot in the north-western corner of the Kingdom. Visitors will notice a strong Burmese influence as it has been a place known for power struggles between various Tai (Shan) and Burmese kingdoms over the years and can be seen in the capital's buildings and temples. It affords the various cultural city’s atmosphere, the mixed life styles, the outstanding unique of Shan, and various other hill tribe villages such as Karen, Hmong, Lahu, Lisu, and Lawa. Each tribe has its own beautiful art of tradition and culture, own life style including the pure wonderful nature that makes Mae Hong Son.
Surrounded by mountains and punctuated by small but picturesque Jong Kham Lake, this provincial capital is still relatively peaceful despite the intrusion of daily flights from Chiang Mai. Mae Hong Son has become part of northern Thailand’s standard tourist circuit, with plenty of guesthouses, hotels and resorts in the area. It is a well-situated town and an excellent staging point for those planning to explore the surrounding hinterland. Much of the accommodation is clustered within a ten-minute walk of the lake. This is the most popular area and is close to most of the restaurants, travel agents and other facilities. The area surrounding Mae Hong Son town is also dotted with some excellent guesthouses and restaurants, most of which are within a short ride of town. If you have your own transport, there are several more resorts farther out of town. There are also a fine selection of upmarket hotels and luxury resorts in the mountain areas. There are hotels and resorts in Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi, Mae Sariang, Pai, Pang Mapha and Sop Moei ays, amongst others.
Apart from sightseeing in the little town itself, raft or boat tours on the Mae Hong Son river can be arranged or elephant rides and visits to hill tribe villages. It's as a trekking centre that Mae Hong Son earns much of its fame and there's a full complement of trekking possibilities from a half day wander through to three and four day foot expeditions through the hills. The region is also well known for its multitude of caves: archaeologists have discovered some 67 in the province, many still containing prehistoric relics. Most travellers come here for trekking and hiking in the beautiful countryside and cool climate. Trekking up and down Mae Hong Son's steep inclines is tough, but the hilltribe villages are generally unspoilt and the scenery is magnificent.
